Gellent is the first fully dedicated 2D SDF editor publicly released. You can create doodles and edit the shapes you create, quickly and easily without any prior experience. The models you create can be saved, shared and exported into a unique format for complete lossless quality. This program comes with many different tools, creating a streamlined artflow experience for anyone to enjoy. These objects are rendered using signed distance fields, programmed completely from scratch in Java and GLSL, where the entire engine rendering pipeline was built from the ground up.
All of the engines code is available completely open-source, which you can download and view the code here.
Gellent received the award for "Best Design" in the TU Dublin, Final Year Project Fair 2026. From the judges themselves, they said the competition for that year was the toughest it has ever been. This achievement makes me so proud and really helps validate all the effort and countless nights that went into it.
An opportunity to work on software that I dreamed of creating was so rewarding. Inspired by my favourite SDF modelling software Dreams, I managed to create to replicate its fun for creating models for anyone to experience.
This report was made for my college thesis during my final year of computer science. It goes over everything about this project, down to the plan, resources used and the execution. The report contains everything about how Gellent was made over the span of the entire projects development.
